Chinese Ambassador visits family farm in Mayo

On Saturday, 6 May 2017, H.E. Dr. Yue Xiaoyong, Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, visited Mr. Cathal Garvey's dairy farm in County Mayo.

The Ambassador was warmly received by Mr. Cathal Garvey and Mrs. Mary Garvey, Cathal's parents and aunt as well as five of his six children.

Garvey's farm became known to many people in China in May 2015 when Chinese Premier Li Keqiang visited the farm together with his counterpart Mr. Enda Kenny, Taoiseach of Ireland, as well as Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., the then Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

With the help of his parents, six children (2 daughters and 4 sons) and two dogs, Cathal and Mary have kept 110 Holstein/Friesian dairy cows on a traditional Irish dairy farm, which covers an area of 107 hectares in south Mayo and has been operated by the Garvey family for more than 250 years.

Accompanying the Ambassador on his trip to Mayo was Mr. Pan Xiongwen, Head of Political and Press Section of the Chinese Embassy.
