Ambassador He and An Ceann Comhairle Co-host a Reception

On 20th November, Ambassador He Xiangdong and Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl co-hosted Ireland-China Parliamentary Friendship Group reception in Leinster House. Over 40 TDs, senators, and representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Enterprise Ireland, Tourism Ireland and other relavant departments attended the reception.


To start his speech, Ambassador He expressed sincere gratitude for the great contribution made by the Ceann Comhairle and the Friendship Group to Sino-Irish relations.

Ambassador He spoke highly of the magnificent development and sound momentum of China-Ireland diplomatic relations during the past 40 years since its establishment in various fields including politics, economic and trade, investment, culture, education and tourism. He stressed that to enquire better bilateral relations, some fundamental principles are of vital importance. The two countries shall adhere to the principles stated in Joint Communique on 1979, and abide by ‘One China’ principle. The two sides shall consolidate mutual understanding and political trust, unleash the great potential of economic cooperation, and enhance exchanges between the two peoples.

The Ambassador expressed his readiness together with the Embassy to continue to work along with the Friendship Group and all Irish friends to jointly promote China-Ireland relations to a new height.


In his speech, Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl said the Ireland-China Parliamentary Friendship Group reception would surely further deepen Irish TDs and senators’ understanding of China and attach even more importance to Ireland-China relations. When recalling his visit to China in 2018, Ceann Comhairle said the historic achievements in China’s reform and opening up process are impressive and admirable. Ireland and China currently enjoy frequent high-level exchanges. The cooperation in economics and trade, science and technology, agriculture, culture and tourism and other areas is growing rapidly with huge potential. Ireland resolutely adheres to One China policy. The Ireland-China Parliamentary Friendship Group and himself would like to strengthen exchanges to jointly push the bilateral ties and pragmatic cooperation to a new height.
