Ambassador He meets Frances Fitzgerald MEP

On 20th February, Ambassador He Xiangdong met with Mrs. Frances Fitzgerald MEP. They exchanged views on various fields including enhancing China-EU and China-Ireland friendly cooperation.

Ambassador He said that China and EU are both important forces to uphold international cooperation and multilateralism. China attaches great importance to China-EU relations. With both sides’ joint efforts, China-EU cooperation in fields including economic and trade, investment enjoys sound momentum. This year there will be a series of high-level exchanges between China and EU, which will design the blueprint for further development of the bilateral relations. The Chinese side expects to work with the EU side to finalize negotiation of the China-EU investment agreement, to launch the feasibility research of a free trade agreement at an early date, so as to create more opportunities for the bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

Ambassador He said that Ireland is an important member of EU and one of China’s trusted friends and partners in EU. In recent years, the China-Ireland Strategic Partnership for Mutually Beneficial Cooperation develops rapidly, and China-Ireland pragmatic collaborations achieved significantly in areas such as economic and trade, science and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. China is ready to join hands with Ireland to push the friendly cooperation between the two countries deeper and further. Mrs. Frances Fitzgerald has been engaged in promoting the China-EU and China-Ireland relations for a long period. The Chinese side is willing to work together with Mrs. Fitzgerald MEP to further enhance the China-EU and China-Ireland relations.

Ambassador He also briefed the MEP China’s efforts in fighting against COVID-19, and Huawei’s cooperation with its Irish partners in 5G.

Mrs. Fitzgerald expressed her admiration to China’s battle against COVID-19, and hoped that under the leadership of Chinese government, Chinese people will surely conquer the epidemic soon.

Mrs. Fitzgerald said development of EU-China relations benefits the whole world. EU attaches importance to strengthening its cooperation with China in bilateral areas and international affairs. As an MEP, she will continue to be committed to enhancing economic, trade and investment cooperation between EU and China, and promoting communication between the European Parliament and China.

Mrs. Fitzgerald stressed that China is an important partner of Ireland. She keeps her eyes on the development of Ireland-China relations and is willing to make constructive contribution to the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. She emphasized that Huawei’s 5G business in Ireland is one of achievements of Ireland-China pragmatic cooperation. High technology cooperation is cross border and benefits well-being of all human beings, and shall not suffer from groundless interference or destruction.

Also present were Mr. Shen Mingchun, Chief of Political and Press Section of the Embassy, and Mr. Conor Glynn, PA to Frances Fitzgerald MEP.
