On November 23, 2020, State Councilor Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence Simon Coveney at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Ireland have been actively cooperating in the fight against COVID-19, which demonstrates the traditional friendship and pragmatic and efficient cooperation between the two countries. China is ready to continue to provide support within its capacity to Ireland in its fight against the pandemic and believes that Ireland will be able to overcome the pandemic at an early date. Wang Yi said that despite the impact of the pandemic, the trade and investment between China and Ireland have been growing against the trend and bilateral cooperation in science, technology and education has been progressing smoothly. China-Ireland relations have maintained continuity and stability, and presented a sound momentum of development, which has brought important benefits to the two peoples. China hopes that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Ireland relations will achieve better development.

Wang Yi congratulated Ireland for its upcoming appointment as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, saying that the Security Council is the forefront in upholding multilateralism, maintaining the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and safeguarding international fairness and justice. The world today is full of increasing uncertainty and instability. China is ready to strengthen coordination with Ireland in the Security Council so that the Security Council can truly play its due role in safeguarding world peace and security. China hopes that Ireland will continue to play a positive and constructive role in promoting the in-depth development of China-EU relations.

Coveney said that in the face of the pandemic, Ireland and China have conducted good cooperation. He thanks China for its valuable support and assistance in fighting the pandemic. The Irish side believes that only multilateral cooperation can effectively address global challenges such as public health. Ireland hopes to deepen friendship and promote cooperation with China on the basis of mutual respect and dialogues. Ireland will uphold the spirit of independence and adhere to principles to fulfill its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Ireland looks forward to maintaining close communication and coordination with China on international and regional hotspot issues. Noting that the EU-China relations are full of opportunities, the Irish side is ready to play a positive role in promoting EU-China relations.
